Keeping Busy in the Garden!

Work in the garden has been keeping me really busy. The area towards the back of the garden (where I am starting) has been virtually untouched for over 20 years, which means it’s been completely taken over by a mixture of human junk that was left down there and tough plants that have been reclaiming it as their own.

It does feel like a bit of a loosing battle at times, as I am trying not to buy in new soil, but work with what’s already on the land and give it new life. It’s a tough job, as it is mostly just clay. Still, slowly but surely, I’m getting somewhere – and the rewards will taste much sweeter for it! At least this is all work that only has to be done once. As soon as everything is up and running it will be easy to maintain (fingers crossed).

The garden already had some amazing fruit trees. I’ve been enjoying fresh grapefruit all winter long, and the last of the fruit is still on the tree. The apple tree has just finished blossoming and it’s great to see new apples forming on the tree. Hopefully there will be lots of plums for Christmas / Litha (midsummer) too!

Welcome to wonderful, albeit exhausting, world of growing your own food Bryce. Those nasturtium look great! You know you can eat the leaves and flowers right? Wonderful natural antibiotic food. Especially good companions for those apple trees.

Thanks Mieke! Yup – they’re great. I add them to salads. I didn’t know that they are a companion to apple trees though. I’ll have to plant some closer. :)
